Trade

CO2 trading is an important component of global climate protection and enables companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Trading in CO2 allowances is based on international standards and regulations that ensure the integrity of the market. Companies can buy CO2 certificates to offset their emissions and improve their climate footprint.

International standards

The Kyoto Protocol is the most important international agreement for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It sets binding emissions reduction targets for industrialized countries and allows countries to trade emissions allowances. The 2015 Paris Agreement replaced the Kyoto Protocol and sets more ambitious targets to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius.

EU Emissions Trading Scheme

The EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) is the world's largest emissions trading system and covers about 40% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. It is part of the EU's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The EU ETS includes more than 11,000 utilities and industrial facilities in 31 countries.

Important certificates and projects

There are different types of CO2 certificates that are used in different projects. Examples are:

Certified Emission Reductions (CERs): These certificates come from projects in developing countries that reduce or avoid emissions. CERs can be used in the EU ETS and other emissions trading systems. Verified Emission Reductions (VERs): These certificates come from projects in industrialized countries and can be used in voluntary emissions trading systems.

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs): These certificates are generated in connection with renewable energies and can be used in voluntary emissions trading systems.
