Award for exemplary climate protection: project from Arce and KfW Bank honored.

Berlin, August 31, 2023 – (Climagate/ Berlin)The recent award from the Brazilian state of Acre and KfW Bank is a significant milestone in the global fight against climate change. The REDD Early Movers (REM) Acre project, financed by KfW, received the “Award for Excellence in Competitiveness 2023” in the “Best Practices” category from the Brazilian Center for Public Leadership (CLP – Centro de Liderança Pública).

The state of Acre in Brazil has impressively demonstrated that jurisdictional REDD+ projects can provide effective strategies for tropical forest conservation. These projects reward those who make a sustained effort to protect forests, creating not only environmental benefits but also social and economic opportunities for the community.

The REM Acre project, jointly funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and implemented by KfW Development Bank in cooperation with the Acre State Government, is an outstanding example of these efforts.

The REM program not only rewards tropical rainforest conservation, but also reinvests proceeds in improving livelihoods and strengthening the bioeconomy. To date, more than 26,000 people have benefited from this program, including 6,500 families of exploiters and family producers and more than 10,000 indigenous people.

Roseneide Sena, coordinator of the REM program, emphasizes the importance of investing in the community: “Of all the money it receives, the REM program today directly uses 33% for family production, an additional 12% for indigenous populations and 17% for sustainable livestock production. The REM program rewards the state’s efforts to prove that there is indeed the possibility of development through productive integration to keep the forest alive and allow people to earn a wage for this environmental service in Acre.”

This award is a recognition of the hard work and dedication of the Acre government and the entire REM Acre team. It shows that protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development can go hand in hand.
